Blond hair flowin’, skin so toned
Answered to no one
Livin’ alone
We drove her Impala
Up to the tram
To a wonderland
In California
I came from the east with plenty of problems
Tons of hang-ups
No way to solve them
No way
Except In California
We jumped for joy over rocks and logs
I got in the hunt
Like a needy dog
The day grew golden on that climb to the top
I wrote her name backwards
I couldn’t get enough
Of this girl
From California
On the way down
We took a new route
I couldn’t hold it in
And I couldn’t hold out
In California
And it’s a failed dream
It’s lost and unseen
But I fold my arms and I let it go
California
And it’s a failed dream
It’s lost and unseen
But I fold my arms and I let it go
California

IN CALIFORNIA is a song about a hike with others up to the top of Mt. San Jacinto on a late October day many years ago. At nearly 11,000 ft. in Palm Springs, the trail up has its physical challenges that begin with an exciting, steep tram ride to the trailhead. It was a free-spirited group led by a young woman who was as independent as they come-- and so easy to fall for. The type who would jump off a boat if a group of dolphins whizzed by, just to be close to them. Her comfort zone was to be unattainable, and unknowable. It has seemed all too common, and there’s nothing that can be done to know anyone like that. Remind yourself. it’s California. There’s lots to take in. Let it go.
