She's skippin' to the docks
Through the park, shiny brown locks
California morning
It's cool
Old sails are fillin' out
Angel smiles, never shouts
She's not sufferin' fools
Better take her picture now
She'll be slippin' away somehow
She lights the darkest space
Takes her heart to a kinder place
The Star Of India
With You
Someday it all sails away
Haunts you in the craziest way
Like a love you never knew
Better take her picture now
She'll be slippin' away somehow

STAR OF INDIA is a California song about how fast a child grows up. The charming young protagonist here always finds herself so easily attracted to the San Diego waterfront, and in particular the Maritime Museum and its historic sailing vessel, "Star of India". The ship is a survivor of remarkable beauty and history, and it only rarely leaves the dock to sail the open waters of the Pacific. The "Star" has become a memorable symbol within a child's early years, and her voyage is fast. One day she's three, then seven, then fourteen, and it all just keeps going. Better take her picture now, she'll be slipping away somehow.
