I rolled right past the old farm
Where the woods had burned away
Where love was just an all too soon
Forgotten summer day
You had painted pine trees
It seemed they owned the air
Now they're lost with time and wisdom
And you don't care
You can cheer a lost cause
Follow it to dust
And say you never knew someone
That you could ever trust
And if you ever want me
I'm not an easy kill
Hitchin' up the roadside
I won't be lying still
You can cheer a lost cause
Follow it to dust
And say you never knew someone
That you could ever trust
You seem to have you head down
Fingering your favorite glass
Staring at the early dream
With a wind that blew right past
You can cheer a lost cause
Follow it to dust
And say you never knew someone
That you could ever trust

NOT AN EASY KILL is more than a song about lost friendship and love. It's about recognizing that maybe they never existed. A road once so rich with the promise of joy devolves to the geography of nowhere. That idyllic farm you went by so many times in your youth is isolated and falling apart with everything growing out of it. There's real damage, and you're surviving your hurt. You once believed you could thrive there and you hung in, believing in the friend or lover who sadly never was authentic. To admit it all might be the final blow, so you don't. You won't begin to accept that it's probably in some way your fault. You'll cheer that lost cause and follow it to dust, and then say you could never trust anyone. This is the worst kind of mathematics. Nothing adds up except the years. Nothing could ever have grown here.
